The Duke and Duchess of Northumberland have joined with the nation in showing their gratitude. For the foreseeable future the NHS flag will be flying over Alnwick Castle and at Syon House in London.
The Duke said: “Over the last few weeks we have seen the horrors caused by this terrible pandemic. Many have lost loved ones in tragic circumstances and we’ve all been touched and affected by the effects of this virus on our family, friends and way of life.

“Alnwick Castle is a symbol of resilience that has stood for over 900 years, witnessing wars, famine and disease. Now it flies a special flag to pay tribute to all those heroic doctors, nurses, carers and ancillary staff helping us get through this.”
A giant sand art message of support to the NHS and key workers was drawn on Bamburgh beach.
The 60 feet long message was created by Bamburgh Castle maintenance manager Andrew Heeley on his daily exercise while on lockdown at the iconic fortress.
The castle has also raised a ‘thank you’ NHS Union flag.

“What you are doing is superhuman and we want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts – as well as the very top of the nation's best-loved castle.”
Although the attraction remains closed to the public due to coronavirus, the venue is busy working on its website and social media content so it can still be enjoyed by online audiences.
