The CoRE Legacy fund is supported by income received from the sale of the community wind turbine on the northern outskirts of Berwick.
Since starting in 2015, the scheme has awarded over £127,000 to community groups, charities and sports clubs throughout the North East, saving them money, but also reducing their carbon footprint through the use of renewable energy technologies and energy conservation.

Hide AdBerwick Bowling Club, which was awarded £5,000 in October 2019 for the installation of solar panels on their clubhouse, is delighted with the result having seen a £400 reduction in electricity costs in the first year. The money saved has allowed them to make other improvements to the facilities, which wouldn’t otherwise have been possible.
Other organisations to have benefited from the fund include Tweedmouth Rangers which received funding for insulation in their clubhouse and Berwick Coastwatch which was able to replace a wind turbine with a grant.
Ann Turner, operations director at Berwick Community Trust, based at the William Elder Building on Castlegate, said: “We are thrilled to be in a position to help local communities and organisations save money, while also reducing their carbon emissions and energy consumption.
"With the climate crisis high on the agenda and the COP26 in Glasgow later in the year, the emphasis on clean energy, renewable technologies and energy conservation is now more important than ever.”
